EU declared 2008 as “Year of intercultural dialogue”, a European Year which, because of its multiplier effect, will develop into a unique instrument for raising awareness of the chosen theme among citizens, particularly young people.

The European Year is expected to:

> Promote intercultural dialogue as an instrument to assist European citizens, and all those living in the European Union, in acquiring the knowledge and aptitudes to enable them to deal with a more open and more complex environment;

> Raise the awareness of European citizens, and all those living in the European Union, of the importance of developing active European citizenship which is open to the world, respectful of cultural diversity and based on common values.

In this context, the Corfu, Greece based non-profit organisation “Europe of Cultures Forum: Adriatic-Ionian Chapter” (EOCF-AI www.eocf-ai.org) and the European Parliament (Offices for Greece, Italy and Slovenia (acting EU presidency) took the initiative co-organise the 1st Adriatic-Ionian Intercultural Dialogue Conference in Corfu, Greece on 27 - 28 June 2008.

The objective of this conference is to bring together representatives from all EU and non-EU Adriatic-Ionian countries as well as neighboring countries in the region to discuss the challenges of inter-culturalism with a view to enhance cultural cooperation and better understanding among  citizens in the region. Conference participants will have the opportunity to listen to from and dialogue with MEP and EU and government officials as well as representatives from civil society and industry from all over Europe. 

The issues of Intercultural Dialogue in a changing European landscape and in the Knowledge Society Age will be discussed in plenary and parallel workshops will try to devise best practices in relation to Cultural Cooperation in EU and its neighborhood and Cultural heritage and Tourism.

 

At the end of the conference participants will be called to undersign “The Corfu Intercultural Dialogue Declaration”, a document which will contain not only the conclusions of the conference but also views for further action with emphasis in the Adriatic-Ionian region.
